HLTFA302A - Remote First Aid

Course Outcome:
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid to a casualty in a remote or isolated area. It is appropriate for those undertaking work or travel in these type of areas.

Entry Requirements:
This unit has a pre-/co-requisite of HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid, which must be completed either prior to commencement of, or in conjunction with, this course.

Qualification:
It is important that you attend each session of this course so that you are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.

Your nationally recognised qualification will be accredited by the Victorian Qualifications Authority and entered on the National Training Information Service.

Your nationally qualification will be valid for 3 years and the Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that you attend a resuscitation update every 12 months. If you are unable to attend any sessions, please contact your instructor.

Competencies to be achieved during the training:
At the successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Prepare for isolated travel or work, accounting for expected contingencies.
2. Assess a casualty's condition to determine the appropriate response.
3. Evaluate the options for obtaining medical assistance and/or transporting the casualty.
4. Monitor a casualty's condition and undertake ongoing first aid procedures as required.
5. Provide shelter from the elements and comfort the casualty.
6. Establish communications and work in conjunction with medical and emergency services support.
7. Evaluate management of the incident and participate in debriefing to improve future planning and response.

Assessment Procedure:
Assessment will be conducted at the end of the course to demonstrate to your instructor that you have the required knowledge and skills of the procedures necessary to manage a life threatening situation in a remote area.

This process will consist of
- Theory assessment requiring satisfactory completion of all questions.
- Practical skill competencies demonstrating competencies in all skills as detailed above, conducted in simulated remote conditions.

Students with identified language, literacy and numeracy deficits will be offered an oral assessment in place of written theory if required.

You must pass each section to qualify for a certificate of attainment.

Facilities & Equipment:
Each participant will be provided with all of the intellectual materials required to study all modules. Each program will also be supported with adequate Teaching Aids to assist with the theory and practical training modules such as CPR manikins, Bandages, Visual Aids, Handouts etc as appropriate.
